National level conferences on refractories in India commenced in early 1970s and the first overseas participation in refractories conference in India was in the year 1978. Subsequently several international conferences were attempted and in 1993 a decision was taken in principle to organize biannual international conference on refractories. With the liberalization of the economic policy and coming into effect of the World Trade Organization in 1994, the industry felt the need for closer interaction with the global refractories community. The first India International Refractories Congress (or IREFCON) was held in 1994 and this has continued every alternate year except for a miss out in 2004 and 2020.
Over the years, IREFCON has developed as one of the premier global event on refractories where some of the best minds of the industry meet to discuss, deliberate on relevant technical matters and pursue business networking to promote their respective business interests. Users of refractories like steel, cement, aluminium, glass etc are growing at a fast pace in India and so is the refractories. With more than 2 million tonnes of refractories production and turnover of Rs 20000 crores +, Indian refractory industry is a vibrant industry which has evinced interest from all concerned persons worldwide. IREFCON is the best platform to learn about the industry and future opportunities it offers along with the associated challenges.
India’s core sector industries are growing at an amazing pace due to increased spending in infrastructure, housing and also boost in production of automobile, white goods etc. Refractories, which remains a silent driver of steel, cement, copper, aluminium, glass production as also witnessed significant growth in the past few years. Domestic refractory industry now has a turnover of Rs. 20,000 crore plus while its production touches almost 2 million tonnes.
Globally, green house gas emission remains a challenge which is particularly true for core sector industries which contribute to this process as a response, scientists and technocrats are working to realign production along green route for which we see steel making with hydrogen, increased focus on recycling and scrap usage, usage of cleaner fuel etc. Refractories have dual role to play in this critical move:
i. Reduce GHG emissions of its own production process.
ii. Help reduce the GHG emissions of its user industries.
Already a number of Indian refractory makers, both Indian and abroad have developed various innovative solutions to address this issue which includes cleaner fire and technology, value added recycled raw materials etc. in the production site and increased lining life, retention of heat at the process site. The theme of IREFCON 2026 is “Innovative solutions for a sustainable tomorrow” where scientists, R&D experts, business leaders across the globe will assemble to discuss deliberate and assimilate knowledge on the aforementioned issues.
From 2008 onwards, IRMA is the sole organizer of IREFCON.
